“ Liz Hampson’s artwork takes us further than the image and creates multiple surface layers. Her understated approach opens each image to infinite interpretation.” Art Review, 2011
I appreciate the influence of Art. It helps me to pay attention to the fullness of life. For me, it’s the process of making art and it is a way of “being in touch with my creative side”. I spend most of my time working with my students and then it is nice to explore my own Art possibilities.
In most of my artwork I use considerable layers of technical application, capturing transient fragility, yet focusing attention on the subtle use of texture and colour.
I often go camping with my two boys surrounded by natural wonders. I like the sense of nature around me. This subject, for me, brings a sense of freedom and this helps me to create life on a canvas. With the natural and fresh markings, this style can be persuaded into any emerging natural abstract scene. The layers spontaneously arrive and the connection of flowing water is also an important part of the imagery. This part of the scene offers the transportable nature and movement of water. The water itself does contain the power to bring about change. Water creates its own pathway. We are all on a pathway to somewhere. The energy of water and nature is positive. These series of works are fresh, busy and blissful, my pathway right now.
This series is based on the serpent. Serpent is a word of Latin origin (something that creeps, snake) that is commonly used in a specifically mythic context. Serpents are represented as potent guardians of temples and other sacred spaces. This connection may be grounded in the observation that when threatened frequently hold and defend their ground. These snake figurative images are not to be regarded as a mundane image, but as the bearer of some symbolic value. The series was influenced by the Serpent Snake connected with the value of the female image, potent guardians and personal narratives that each female has in her life.
This series of paintings delivers images of a moment in time, to rest and get away from day to day routines. The image creates a certain stillness and essence of natural ideas, colours and layers. The alone female is not quite alone; she has her peaceful thoughts and a moment in time to think. She is quiet isolated, but has her own time to finally be herself and find that other path in need.
This series is about the need to be continually looking at ourselves and comparing ourselves with others. Is it out of vanity or has the universe made us into a society that continually needs to judge the way we look. Within the story the Queen possesses a magical mirror that answers any question, to which she often asks: "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is fairest of all?" to which the mirror always replies "You, my queen, are fairest of all." But when Snow White reaches the age of sixteen, she becomes as beautiful as the day and continues on the pathway of jealousy.
This series describes a yearning for the past and "returning home" and came to be an important topic in my life when my grandmother past away. The images includes a general interest in past eras and their personalities and events in which people that are close to me have passed away linked with the remembrance of something from my childhood. The images are ghost like, representing the soul or spirit of a deceased person. The spirit in the image manifests itself by moving, invisibly and visibly through the artwork.
This series was influenced by my own recollection of dreams. The way we move from one dream to the other. The way we view our dreams and the connection the dreams may or may not have within us. The collaged images are a succession of thoughts, images or emotions which the mind experiences during sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not fully understood. The Dream-catcher is a subtle image throughout the works. The "dream-catcher", hung above a bed, is used as a charm to protect sleeping children. Dream-catchers are not meant to last forever but are intended to dry out and collapse as the child enters the age of wonderment. This series captures these moments, ideas and connections.
This series are a range of mixed media work. The folio of work ranges from metal flower painting to a collection of subtle experiments of made paper motifs. When I create a painted or photographed work using mixed media it is important for me to choose the layers carefully and allow enough drying time between the layers to ensure the final work will have integrity. If different layers are imposed many interesting effects can be achieved and the images take their place on the canvas.
